Planning

Historical Context

Built between 1887 and 1890 for wealthy coal baron Robert Dunsmuir, Craigdarroch Castle is a stunning example of Gilded Age extravagance. Dunsmuir's 'bonanza castle' was intended to announce his status as the richest man in Western Canada. After the Dunsmuir family's time, the castle served as a military hospital, a college, and a music conservatory before being preserved as the museum it is today, offering a window into the region's dramatic history of wealth and social change.

Photography Tips

  • Use a wide-angle lens if you have one to capture the full scope of the grand rooms.
  • Focus on details: the texture of the woodwork, the patterns in the stained glass, the intricate hardware.
  • For the best light, try to photograph rooms near their large windows.
  • Be patient and wait for moments when rooms clear of other visitors for a cleaner shot.
  • Turn off your flash; it is not permitted and will create harsh reflections on the glass and polished wood anyway.

Insider Tips

  • Take your time on the main floor to read about the Dunsmuir family history; it makes the rest of the tour much more meaningful.
  • Don't rush through the upper floors; the servants' quarters offer a fascinating contrast to the opulence below.
  • The best, unobstructed photos of the exterior are often from across the street to capture the full scale of the castle.
  • Listen for the sounds of the orchestrion, a rare self-playing orchestral instrument, which is sometimes played for visitors.

A Stunning Piece of Victorian History

As someone from the UK, I've seen my fair share of castles, but Craigdarroch is a unique North American take on the Baronial style. The woodwork is simply breathtaking, especially the grand staircase. It's a strenuous climb to the top, but the views of Victoria and the mountains are well worth the effort. A must-do for any history or architecture buff visiting the city.

Impressive Mansion, But Be Prepared for Stairs

This castle is a beautifully preserved piece of history. The self-guided tour lets you go at your own pace, which is nice. The story of the Dunsmuir family is fascinating. My only caution is for those with any knee or mobility problems – there are many, many stairs and no elevator. Otherwise, a very impressive visit. Booking online was easy and saved us time.

Worth Every Step!

What an incredible place! You feel like you've been transported back in time. The level of detail in every room is astounding, from the furniture to the stained glass. The 360-degree view from the tower room is the perfect reward for climbing all those stairs. I downloaded the audio guide, which I highly recommend as it added so much context to what I was seeing.

An Elegant and Beautiful Experience

Visiting Craigdarroch Castle was a highlight of my trip to Victoria. The craftsmanship is of such high quality. Each room has its own character. It was very peaceful to walk through and imagine the life of the family. The view of the city from the top floor was amazing. I recommend going early in the morning for a quieter visit.

Don't Miss This Victoria Gem

Wow! This place is incredible. Way more impressive in person than in pictures. The self-guided tour format is perfect, allowing you to spend as much or as little time in each room as you want. The history of the coal baron family is wild. Climbing the stairs is a bit of a workout, but the view is the ultimate payoff. A true historical treasure.

A Glimpse into the Gilded Age

A fascinating visit. The castle is a monument to the excesses of the Gilded Age, and it's preserved wonderfully. The stained glass windows are true works of art. It's not a 'castle' in the European military sense, but a grand mansion. The self-guided tour is informative, but be sure to wear comfortable shoes for all the stairs!

Absolutely Spectacular!

From the moment you see it from the street to the final view from the tower, Craigdarroch is a class act. The sheer quality of the materials and the craftsmanship is astounding. It tells a powerful story about ambition and fortune in a young Canada. A must-see in Victoria, without a doubt. The climb is part of the experience!
